the best thing you can do is give the computer away without the hard drive. Units are now cheap enough so it does not diminish the value of the PC by far. You can also format the hard drive before it. to discourage casual or even someone with moderate ability to obtain the data, but a professional can make things, unless physical areas of the unit will actually be overwritten.
